As you may have noticed, Bermuda Shorts has been pretty quiet. That's not because I've moved away or lost interest in this gorgeous island in the middle of the Atlantic. It's because I've dedicated myself to new projects, plain and simple.

The most exciting of the bunch?

My fancy new website, DavidLaHuta.com, which now features my fancy new blog, Live Out Loud. As you'll see, the blog is all about celebrating life to its fullest, so you'll be pleased to learn that I'll continue to post about Bermuda and all of its pink sand glory on the new website as well—just search for the tag 'Bermuda Shorts' and anything about the island will instantly pop up. While there you can also read about my adventures around the world, what life is like as a stay-at-home dad and updates about my increasingly busy television career.

That said, if all you want is honest-to-goodness information about this sunny place that I call home, then I'd suggest to check out bermuda.com for comprehensive destination information including where to shop, stay and eat; GoToBermuda.com for hotel deals and general updates from the Department of Tourism; Bernews, The Royal Gazette and The Bermuda Sun for headline news from around the island; the Bermuda Weather Service for the most accurate local forecast anywhere on the web; and NothingToDoInBermuda, which lists a day-by-day account of what's happening here on the island.

Of course, if you're still looking for a local's opinion don't miss a few of my classic island articles that I've written throughout the years including 36 Hours in Bermuda, from the New York Times; The Many Faces of Bermuda, originally published on Jetsetter; What Happened to the Bermuda Triangle from ISLANDS magazine; Reflections of an Ex-Pat on Gadling; and Winter Deals and Sunny Skies on Huffington Post Travel. Also, don't miss this collection of videos that I shot exclusively for the Bermuda Channel, the island's most-watched visitors network.

And finally, if you're really in a pinch, head on over to the contact page of DavidLaHuta.com to learn how to reach me directly. I'm always happy to help a traveler in need.

So that's it my friends. It's been a great ride here at Bermuda Shorts but it's time to move onto bigger and better things. So without further adieu, I invite you to join me over at Live Out Loud for a small bite of Bermuda but a bigger slice of me.David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com83tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-36691881519543923602012-09-07T09:03:00.001-03:002012-09-07T09:09:04.409-03:00At Least We've Got Waves
Hurricane Leslie is officially churning its way up the Atlantic, and although the Category 1 storm is forecasted to swing just east of Bermuda on Sunday, its swells have been nothing less than fantastic. For surfers, that is. Just check out the video above. That was shot yesterday near The Reefs hotel in Southampton—an exposed reef break that has fairly consistent waves during storm season. For specifics about the break check out Surf Forecast for more, but if you're looking for a wave of your own, this would be the place. It is not however, the only spot local surfers are catching waves this week. Bermuda photographer John Manderson documented chest-to-head-high waves across the island, including these images taken at Horseshoe Bay. And I've witnessed tons of surfers all along the south shore, from Dunkleys to Tuckers, both of which are hosting waves unlike I've ever seen in Bermuda. For more about local surf breaks, check out this (albeit slightly dated) article in TransWorld Surf. And be sure to keep checking Bermuda Shorts for continued updates about Hurricane Leslie, which according to all local reports, should pack a punch over the weekend. Thank goodness I've got my rum.David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com39tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-34348302276027042622012-09-05T09:02:00.000-03:002012-09-05T09:02:33.330-03:00Storm Watch: Hurricane Leslie

Some of you may have noticed that Bermuda Shorts has been semi-retired for awhile now. It's true: The rigors of life, work and admittedly, stay-at-home-dad-dom have sacrificed yet another blog. Well, I'm happy to report that your daily dish from paradise is back—that is, until I lose power due to the impending impacts of Tropical Storm Leslie, which is currently churning its way up the Atlantic and forecast to become a hurricane any day now. On its current track the storm is expected to approach Bermuda this weekend, with winds as much as 110mph forecast to whip the western portion of the island (a.k.a. The End Where I Live). However, my catastrophe modeler insurance pals are all calling for a direct hit from a Category 2 hurricane sometime on Sunday. And trust me, these people know what they're talking about. Their business is risk. If the surf that's been rolling over the island's south shore is any indication, Bermuda should start bracing for something major (the above picture taken yesterday from Warwick Long Bay doesn't even do it justice; the surf is indeed up). For up to date information about Tropical Storm Leslie, visit the Bermuda Weather Service. And of course, I'll do my best to keep you posted with images, videos and news from the island. Folks, it looks like it might be time for a Dark n' Stormy.David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-89295166552980084962012-02-15T10:04:00.003-04:002012-02-15T10:19:41.409-04:00Calling All New YorkersApologies up front for not having more information than the bare minimum I'm about to share, but if you live or work in New York City and have a chance to be anywhere near Grand Central Station tomorrow, stop by for a chance to win a trip to Bermuda. Then toss your hat in the ring for this year's Newport Bermuda Race, a biannual regatta that departs from Newport, Rhode Island and ends in St. David's, Bermuda every other June (this year it shoves off on the 15th). Founded in 1906 as the first ocean race for amateur sailors, the regatta has since become one of the world's premier sailing events—a 635-mile open ocean contest, most of it out of sight of land. Although the entry process for the 48th annual Newport Bermuda Race has only been open for three weeks over 100 boats have submitted entries, including past champions Sinn Fein—Peter Rebovich's Cal 40, winner of the coveted St. David's Lighthouse Trophy in 2006 and 2008—and Llwyd Ecclestone's Frers 68 Kodiak (Editor's note: This is a big deal within sailing circles. Get excited people). It's a much-anticpated week among sailors, but even more so for us islanders—after all, the much-anticpated race is yet another excuse to drink copious amounts of Dark 'n Stormy's while watching the ships pull in harborside. If you're interested in entering visit the Newport Bermuda Race official website. Did you hear that the Florida Marlins moved to Miami? And that its owners built a brand new ballpark? Well, its 110,000-square-foot-field was officially covered with Bermuda grass, a type of sod that's shade-resistant, which will be helpful in case the team has to close the park's retractable roof due to inclimate weather. Now you know. In other news, the good folks at the Bermuda Sun asked the public a very good question recently: Should we start growing our own crops? Considering spinach costs upwards of $14 a pound and even local squash is astronomical at times, my vote is a wholehearted yes. Now, I understand that farming in Bermuda is expensive since there's no local source of fresh water and the price of 1,000 gallons is $28 as opposed to $6 in 1996, but come on people. I need me some fresh local fruits and veggies. From the disappointing news desk, word has it the PGA plans to pull the Grand Slam of Golf from Bermuda after this year's tournament. Not cool PGA. Didn't you see this super-cool video I filmed from the tournament two years ago? Was that not enough to keep you at beautiful Port Royal Golf Course for another year or two? Whatever. Finally, it looks like Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is finally declaring some of his millions. Looking for a bargain-basement priced room at one of the fanciest (and historic!) hotels in Bermuda? Well, look no further. The Fairmont Hamilton Princess just announced a fantastic deal good for travel until April 30th: 50% off all rooms, if booked from now until February 3rd. That means harborfront rooms that normally cost around $260 a night, now cost $129. Can you say deal? A Saturday night stay is required and a few blackout dates apply, but if you're looking to visit Bermuda this Spring and would like to be within walking distance of Hamilton's many shops and restaurants, this is the deal for you. Case in point: Last week I spilled the beans on an amazing deal at The Reefs Hotel & Club—nearly 70% off an ultra-luxe two or three-bedroom suite, good through mid-March. And while the pull to vacation right here in Bermuda has always been strong, the Reefs' rockbottom rate combined with an increasingly-crazed holiday season proved much too powerful, so I booked in for the weekend. The result? Today's story about Winter Deals and Sunny Skies currently running on Huffington Post Travel. In it you'll get my take on my two-night stay and my indulgent experience at the La Serena Spa (spoiler alert: It was all fantastic!) plus can learn about other seasonal deals and specials in Bermuda right now (like the island's first-ever restaurant week or how to get your third, fourth or fifth night free at a handful of hotels and resorts). This is one of those times. Because apparently 2012 has brought with it a wave of affordability right here in notoriously pricey Bermuda. Got holiday fatigue? Well do I have the getaway for you! From now until March 15th The Reefs Hotel & Club is offering super-low rates in its brand new, ultra-luxe Club Condos. How low you say? Currently two guests can stay in a 2,000-square-foot, two-bedroom condo for just $299 a night, down from $849 normally. It's a whopper of a deal, especially when you consider the luxurious amenities that you'll have at your fingertips including a fully-equipped gourmet kitchen, oversized spa-like bathrooms with gigantic soaking tubs and rain showers, an oceanfront veranda with private Jacuzzi plus flat-screen televisions, Wi-Fi and your own washer/dryer (to rinse off your swim trunks after a dip in the ocean or the Reefs' heated infinity pool, of course). You'll have full access to its sumptuous La Serena Spa—complete with an ocean view relaxation room and body treatments galore—in addition to a private lounge where you can play billiards while sipping your Dark n' Stormy with a view of the turquoise Atlantic. My kinda place! Still on the fence? Current island forecasts call for monthly temperatures in the high 60's, low 70s, which is perfect for a game of golf, long strolls on the beach or relaxing poolside with a great book. And really, what's better than golf, the beach and relaxing poolside? Just one note: Due to minor renovations in the hotel's on-site restaurants, food and beverage services will be unavailable, but a pre-arrival grocery shopping service is available for guests who'd like to stock their in-room kitchen (and of course, the concierge can make reservations at all island restaurants). To book you can call The Reefs directly at 800/742-2008 or go the The Reefs website and book online. And yes, that'll be your living room. I told you it was deluxe. David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-7514820008265534112011-12-30T10:26:00.006-04:002011-12-30T11:44:48.231-04:00That's All Folks!Remember when I used to write ambitious Bermuda Shorts Year In Reviews every December? Yeah, me neither. But of course that was before my wife and I had a son, which has very much flipped my world upside down. In a good way, but upside down nonetheless (like when I had to visit five pharmacies in search of Vitamin D drops shortly thereafter). Indeed 2011 has been a wild year, one so incredibly busy and filled with momentous events both personal and professional that I only managed to post once in all of November (and it was about how I hadn't posted in most of October, which saw a whopping five entries this year). So, as we reflect on another year gone by—the unsuccessful campaign to sail with Stephen Colbert, the hurricanes that weren't, the naughty neckties—let us look forward to another prosperous year ahead. And no, don't think that means I'll be cobbling together another Best of Bermuda list ala March 2010. But I will do my best to keep you in the loop with your daily dish from paradise. In the meantime a special shout out to my Number One Reader and Ultimate B Shorts Fanboy: CB from West Islip (aka the Guy In The Funny Mask). With just five days until Christmas it's officially time to post your most wanted Christmas video ever: Bob Hope's Christmas Show From Bermuda. What? You've never seen this classic variety show from 1990? Well, sit back and do yourself a favor because Bob Hope and friends are about to ham it up Christmas-style. We'll start with this festive holiday classic when the legendary actor, comedian and vaudevillian sings his way down Front Street with his foxy friend Dixie Carter. If you've never seen it get ready for a Bermudaful treat (I especially like when the Silver Bells line, "It's Christmastime in the city" magically becomes "It's Christmastime in Bermuda." Nice work Bob). You can spot The English Sports Shop, Calypso and Gosling's Limited—among other festively lit Front Street shops—plus I also quite like how easy it was to hail a horse. Oh yeah, and pay no attention to the reflection of Christmas tree lights on the screen. It's a fantastic gig, especially in May when I head to Telluride, Colorado, to host Outside Film Festival: Mountainfilm, a 16-episode show, which airs the finest independent documentary films shown at that year's festival (that's me and my co-host Lynsey Dyer on location near Wilson Peak this year). I've blogged about it again and again, even though it had no real connection to Bermuda but that just changed in a major way. This year's festival screened Matt Morris' fantastic short film Mr. Happy Man, a fourteen-minute documentary featuring Bermuda's own Johnny Barnes. In case you've never heard about Johnny, he's an 80-something bearded Bermudian man who greets Hamilton commuters every morning with a wave, a smile and boisterous shouts of "I love ya!" He's so beloved that Bermuda erected a bronze statue in his honor, which stands just yards down the road from where he greets people each morning. If you're interested in watching the entire film in addition to an interesting chat I had with filmmaker Matt Morris in Telluride, head on over to OutsideTelevision.com where you can view the complete episode. And if you feel like sticking around for more you can also watch The Fall Line, about an injured Iraq war veteran who overcomes great odds on the ski slopes of Aspen and Wild Water, a beautiful short film about big water kayaking. Go ahead, check it out! It's the best fourteen minutes you'll watch all day.David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-37284401511879294592011-12-15T09:14:00.004-04:002011-12-15T09:54:34.346-04:00Luke, I am your SantaI've told you how festive Bermuda can be around the holidays, what with rum-recipe-adorned Dunkley's egg nog in the markets, mulled-wine-filled walkabouts in historic St. George's and the proliferation of the island's compact Korean cars, many of which are currently sporting puffy red reindeer noses on their grills. That's right folks, it's officially Christmas in Bermuda. Now, before all of you Bermuda Shorts die hards start clamoring for bootleg Bob Hope in Bermuda Christmas videos (all three of you and yes, I'm talkin' to you West Islip, New York; you Mountain View, California; and you Lyndhurst, New Jersey) what's merrier than a Christmas boat parade? Last weekend islanders were treated to a special holiday treat, one that happens every other year and this year's parade was a doozy. More than 70 boats dressed up in twinkling lights and motored their way around Hamilton Harbor—a festive flotilla that culminated in a thrilling fireworks show that glimmered on the water as it danced in the sky. But what about the boats? You'll find many of my favorites on bermuda.com—gold star nominees like Santa's sleigh, Charlie Brown and a floating barge of illuminated gifts—but it was hard to beat the Star Wars-themed boat you see above. May the Christmas force be with you. David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-51897077344276412232011-12-07T09:02:00.006-04:002011-12-07T10:06:34.240-04:00On Expat LifeIt's no secret that I enjoy life in Bermuda. Hard not to, really. For an island just a two-hour flight from most east-coast gateways Bermuda feels far-flung and dare I say, even exotic at times. Think about it: Where else can you find such stunning (and accessible!) pink sand beaches, world-class championship golf courses (like Port Royal, which just hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf) and friendly faces (like Bermuda's own Johnny Barnes, who greets Hamilton commuters every morning with a wave a smile and is currently the subject a fantastic documentary short from filmmaker Matt Morris called Mr. Happy Man). Yes it's true, Bermuda is indeed a wonderful place to call home, which is largely the sentiment I captured in my latest assignment for AOL's celebrated travel blog, Gadling. Titled On Bermuda Time, the short commentary is peppered with classic only-in-Bermuda tales—like how my supermarket purchases once popped out of my scooter's rear basket—and discusses how I'll take tropical hiccups like those over big city headaches any day. Read it here or at the very least, click on over to check out a triumphant photo of yours truly perched high upon a south shore rock formation. I'm officially a naughty blogger. Just one post for all of November? Geez. And by the looks of it, December is not getting any better. It's already the fifth of the month for goodness sake! Sorry folks, I know you're not into lame excuses but life seems to heat up around the holidays, doesn't it? And by the holidays I mean Christmas, because here in Bermuda, it's all about Christmas. No beatin' around the bush either. This being a Christian nation the island is awash in Christmas cheer, which means just about everywhere you go these days you'll be greeted with a festive "Merry Christmas" rather than the oh-so-PC "Happy Holidays." Fine by me. In fact, Bermuda is jam-packed with cheery Christmas activities all month long. Why just last weekend my family and I attended the St. George walkabout, when the historic homes of Bermuda's oldest town open their doors for Christmas merriment (in case you don't know what that means, think mulled wine and rum-spiked egg nog by the fireplace, multiply that by 20 cedar-laden homes, add a dash of rum cake and some dancing in King's Square and you'll begin to imagine what it's all about; see above, that's what Town Hall looked like). A good time for all and no doubt the beginning of more to come—like the Christmas Boat Parade next weekend, when vessels of all kinds get wrapped in twinkling lights and parade around Hamilton Harbor (here's a picture of the giant multi-colored Michael Jackson, which adorned the winning boat two years ago; groovy, I know). So as I conclude, let this be a warning that while my posts throughout December may be sporatic, I'll do my best to keep you filled with as much Christmas cheer from Bermuda as possible. David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2246568774341884460.post-52110413625833774672011-11-09T07:32:00.005-04:002011-12-10T23:30:33.772-04:00Is it November already?Weddings, fatherhood, oh my! October sure was packed with personal commitments, but November has arrived with abandon and I'm officially back on the rock (at least for a little while...). So, what's happening in Bermuda? How about egg nog for starters and you know how I love my egg nog. Sure, it may seem a tad early to be spotting the sweet stuff in my grocer's dairy case, but there it was, wedged between the whole milk and the half 'n half: Dunkley's Dairy Egg Nog, with helpful Gosling's rum-laden recipes right there on the carton. It's a sure sign of the holiday season—that, and the festive Christmas decorations currently hanging on the City of Hamilton's light posts—and one that I wholeheartedly welcome each year. If so, the PGA just announced a sweet new deal. First up, your good news: Buy one ticket to the season-ending tournament, featuring the winners of golf's four major championships and you'll get one ticket of equal value free (for example, if buy one Monday ticket you'll get one Monday ticket free; if you buy one three-day pass, you'll get one three-day pass free). But what's the catch, you say? Here's your bad news: Tickets must be purchased on Thursday, October 13 at the Washington Mall in downtown Hamilton from 11am to 3pm, which means all of you golf fans currently not living on the island are out of luck. Score one for Bermuda, I guess. Not only will the Breakaway be the largest ship to homeport in Manhattan, but it will also be the largest ship to call upon Bermuda's shores in its storied maritime history. In total the new ship will inject an additional $8 million more into Bermuda's economy, as compared to the ship she replaces, which is good news for the island and great news for its tourism partners. Cruises are scheduled to go on sale to Latitudes members (NCL's loyalty program) on October 14 and will be open to the public on October 17. There was Hurricane Katia, which left some killer surf in her wake; Hurricane Maria, a fairly large storm that dumped rain on the island for a day; and most recently Hurricane Ophelia, a Category 3 whopper that clipped the east end of Bermuda. No direct hits, but gnarly weather nonetheless. Of course, this is all to be expected when you live on an island in the middle of the Atlantic. Storms happen. But earthquakes? Yep, that's right. According to the Royal Gazette, Bermuda was hit with two minor earthquakes on Monday evening: Two 4.5-magnitude tremors that happened within 20 minutes of each other. Granted, both were pretty far from land—reportedly 80 miles south of Hamilton and about seven miles below the surface (right where that red star is)—but still. Earthquakes? Geez.David LaHutahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01747250733582714582noreply@blogger.com0
